Over the summer, there were people who doubted that Drake Maye, the No. 3 pick in April’s NFL draft, was ready to play the quarterback position in the NFL.
The New England Patriots had Maye start the season on the sideline while Jacoby Brissett started under center, but new head coach Jerod Mayo promoted Maye to QB1 just prior to Week 5.
Despite a lack of viable skill players around him and a poor offensive line, Maye has been promising in his four starts with six touchdown passes, and on Sunday, he made a touchdown pass with time running out in regulation to force overtime.
ESPN analyst and former NFL QB Dan Orlovsky said that Patriots fans should be happy about Maye.
“Patriots, you got a guy,” said Orlovsky. “All you gotta do is not mess it up”

New England has been in the wilderness ever since the legendary Tom Brady left following the 2019 season, but perhaps they have found a compass in the form of Maye.
He was dynamite while at the University of North Carolina, and he threw for 3,608 yards, 24 touchdowns and nine interceptions last year after he was named the ACC Player of the Year for the 2022 season.
Interceptions have been a bit of a problem for him this season — he has four on the year, and he had two on Sunday as the Patriots fell in overtime to the Tennessee Titans, 20-17.
His second pick came in overtime with his team looking to either tie or win the game.
